Handbook 1997 : Faculty of Education : Graduate Diploma in Education
The Graduate Diploma in Education provides an initial teacher education course for intending secondary teachers. It is a one-year full-time course in which you study School Experience, Education Studies and two Teaching Methods.
Whilst the course is designed primarily to equip you for teaching positions in secondary schools, it can also provide a valuable preparation for a career in community education, TAFE colleges, the public service and industrial training.
The strength of the course is the wide choice of programs available which accommodate different interests in areas of teaching and key theoretical issues.
This course is in the process of being phased out. The last intake into the course will be in 1997. All students will be able to complete the requirements of the course if normal academic progress is maintained.
On completion of the Graduate Diploma in Education course graduates should be able to:
demonstrate the essential knowledge and skills to perform competently as a beginning teacher;
comprehend the intellectual, social and psychological aspects of their work with learners and synthesise theory and practice;
understand the key concepts of curriculum policy formation and curriculum development;
sustain positive professional relationships with students, other teachers and, where appropriate, parents;
evaluate and use constructive criticism of their own work and of the institutions in which they will teach; and
develop theoretical understandings of schooling and education and implement an ongoing program of self education appropriate to their personal and professional needs.
Applicants must have qualified for a degree or a diploma in a recognised university or tertiary institution, and must have completed the requirements for the Teaching Methods intended (see below).
A high degree of proficiency in all aspects of English is desirable for prospective teachers. Students may be required to undertake language tests as part of the process of selection.
Students who have satisfactorily completed part or all of another course of study at tertiary level may be given credit up to a maximum of 50% of the Graduate Diploma in Education.
To satisfy the requirements of the course, you must satisfactorily complete the three components of the course giving a total of 100 points:
Education Studies 55.0 points
School Experience 25.0 points
Methods of Teaching 20.0 points
You are normally required to study two Methods of Teaching, and to demonstrate your ability to teach them at the secondary school level. However, students who have specialised in the study of LOTE or Mathematics may take LOTE or Mathematics as a double method.
In selecting your teaching subjects, you should keep in mind the importance of having a strong enough academic background to enable you to teach senior classes. Set out below is a guide to the minimum academic background for teaching subjects.
Methods of Teaching prerequisites:
Leave of absence will not be available in 1997.
Details of semester dates and school experience placements are available from the School Experience and Professional Practice Unit.
