Faculty of Education

Geography

Geography, and geography link subjects, are offered by the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies in the Faculty of Arts. Teaching methods are offered by the Faculty of Education. There are two main aims: to prepare future teachers of Geography, Environmental Studies and related subjects in secondary schools, and to provide opportunities for students not intending to be geography teachers to broaden their undergraduate experience through exposure to geography as a field of knowledge and research.

Geography is available to students in all streams of the BEd (Secondary) course and to students in the BEd (Primary), and BSocSc (InfoMgt) courses.

Geography at Year 1 level is offered in two alternative formats. After the first year, a range of subjects is available at the Year 2, Year 3 and Year 4 levels. Students specialising in Geography will normally take, in addition to 25.0 points of Geography at Year 1 level, at least 16.7 points of Geography subjects in both Year 2 and Year 3.

Teaching Method in Geography is available in Year 4. For most students, the prerequisites are Teaching Method in Geography C and 58.4 points of Geography subjects, including 33.3 points beyond Year 1 level. For further information on Teaching Method subjects, see Teaching Method entry in the Bachelor of Education (Secondary) of this Handbook.

Year 1: 121-171 Land, People and Society and 121-172 Global Ecology and Biogeography are semester-length subjects, and together comprise 25.0 points. 121-101 Famine in the Modern World is a year-long subject, and is also worth 25.0 points. These subjects do not have prerequisites: it is not necessary to have completed Geography at Year 12 level or to have studied the subject at school.

Year 2: In general the prerequisite for entry to Year 2 subjects is 25.0 points in Geography at Year 1, or an approved equivalent. Earth Science A1 is an approved equivalent prerequisite for entry to the Year 2 Geography program.

Year 3: The prerequisite for entry to Year 3 subjects is 16.7 points of specific Geography subjects at Year 2 level, or an approved equivalent.
