Handbook 1997 : Faculty of Education : Bachelor of Education (Visual Arts)
The Bachelor of Education (Visual Arts) is a four-year course designed to prepare secondary teachers of art/craft and graphic communication. The course has three major components:
studio practice in a wide range of art and design disciplines;
studies in art history and culture; and
education studies (which include general education studies, art education and school experience).
Students undertake a common first year, gaining experience in studio areas such as drawing; painting; printmaking and photography; ceramics and sculpture; textiles and clothing; metal and wood; and design and graphic communication.
From second year, you narrow your choice of studio subjects until in final year you concentrate on one area of specialisation.
The course develops studies in teaching and educational issues. School experience sessions become increasingly intensive in third and fourth years. Compulsory studies in art education, teaching methods and complementary general education studies give you considerable support for your school experience placements.
This course is in the process of being phased out. The last intake into this course was in 1994. All currently enrolled students will be able to complete the requirements of the course if normal academic progress is maintained.
On completion of the Bachelor of Education (Visual Arts) course graduates should be able to:
apply knowledge, understanding and skills in a studio discipline area in the field of visual arts and teach this studio discipline throughout the post-primary school system;
develop personal expression and a broad knowledge and understanding of the skills of teaching visual arts in the early years of post-primary schools;
demonstrate a knowledge of art history and culture and understand contemporary art movements and how these relate to the teaching of art history and art appreciation in post-primary schools;
comprehend the theoretical and social foundations underlying contemporary issues and developments in education, particularly those related to the teaching of visual arts;
demonstrate general teaching and communication skills and an understanding of the various roles of the teacher, especially as they relate to art and design in the post-primary curriculum;
demonstrate the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to design, implement and evaluate learning programs;
appreciate and apply the major theories, issues and practices associated with visual arts education to curriculum development, particularly in post-primary schools; and
implement an ongoing program of self education appropriate to their personal and professional needs.
The Bachelor of Education (Visual Arts) is a set course with compulsory studies and elective studio studies. To qualify for the award, students who commenced the first year of the course in 1992 or after must comply with the course outline as detailed below. Students enrolled prior to 1992 should check with the Faculty Office if they have any queries.
Drawing is a compulsory study in each of the first three years. Technical and traditional modes are taught in the early years, while later-year students are encouraged to explore more individual lines of enquiry.
The studio areas are:
Ceramics and Sculpture;
Textiles and Clothing;
Design and Graphic Communication;
Painting, Printmaking and Photography;
Wood and Metal.
In fourth year, as part of studio studies, you undertake 10 days of Field Experience.
