Handbook 1997 : Faculty of Education : Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood)
The Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) course aims to develop the specialist skills and knowledge gained through the completion of Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood) or Diploma of Social Science (Child Care Services) and professional experience.
This course prepares an effective early childhood educator with the knowledge, specialised skills and personal qualities necessary for working in professional roles in the care and education of young children.
On completion of the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) graduates should:
be able to demonstrate extended knowledge and understanding of human development;
be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of factors that affect decision making for children's services;
be able to demonstrate knowledge of professional roles of early childhood educators; and
have competence in the management and coordination of children's services.
As a result of the introduction of the Bachelor of Early Childhood Studies in 1993, there have been no new enrolments in the Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood) and the Diploma of Social Science (Child Care Services) since that time. These courses and the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood), are currently being phased out. All currently enrolled students will be able to complete the requirements of the course if normal academic progress is maintained.
1997 is the final year in which Diploma holders will be able to apply to enter the Bachelor of Education fourth year program.
Students entering the course after 1994 must have a General Studies major or equivalent in their diploma.

No credit will be granted towards the fourth year program.
To be eligible to apply for the Bachelor of Education fourth year program you must:
have qualified for a Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood) or a Diploma of Social Science (Child Care Services) or an approved equivalent;
have completed at least one year of professional experience in an approved early childhood setting;
have completed prescribed Human Development Studies, Education and Care Studies, Practicum Studies and Practicum amounting to at least 205 points (including 100 days of supervised, approved field experience) or equivalent studies;
have completed General Studies of at least 61 points, including an approved study of 38 points taken over three years and another approved study of 22 points taken over two years, drawn from those subjects listed in Table 1, or approved equivalent studies; and
have completed a minimum of 32 points of approved elective studies including at least 16 points from Elective Category C1 and 16 points from Elective Category C2 or equivalent.
To satisfy the requirements of the Bachelor of Education fourth year program, you must accumulate a total of 100 points, including completion of:
Professional Development D (16.7 points),
16.7 points of General Studies D continuing the major study undertaken in the pre-service diploma and as listed in Table 1,
16.7 points of human development studies,
50 points of elective subjects from Table 2.
