740-310 Music C1-1: Music Workshop and Systems of Part Writing C

A 2-hour lecture/workshop and a 1-hour lecture/tutorial each week

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • understand and apply the musical syntax and grammar of jazz and popular music language;

  • recognise aurally the common devices used in chord building, chord progression, and melodic styles;

  • analyse common musical devices within jazz composition and popular music;

  • understand and apply various analytical approaches to 20th century composition techniques; and

  • apply these skills in music teaching.

Content:

Systems of Part Writing: a study of the language, compositional techniques and processes within 20th century music. Music Workshop: a practical exploration of the musical and non-musical aspects of 20th century popular music.

Assessment:

Systems of Part Writing: regular assignments (four 1-page music manuscripts) and a composition (20%); periodic writing tests (three 1-hour written tests) (30%). Music Workshop: satisfactory attendance, prepared contributions to class (5%); successful song writing, arranging and recording (30%); written assignments on musical style and history (10%); a review of teaching materials in the area (5%). Completion of all assignments and projects is required, and students must pass each of the two component areas.
