Six hours of lecture/studio/practical sessions each week and an additional four hours of timetabled studio access each week, and a total of 10 days Field Experience

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • demonstrate individual approaches to using ceramics and sculpture as vehicles for expression;

  • demonstrate sound knowledge and understanding of materials and processes appropriate to ceramics and sculpture;

  • use studios and their facilities in a manner that is both safe and non-injurious to health; and

  • understand various approaches to teaching ceramics and sculpture.

Content:

Students will be expected to concentrate on the development of personal expression through an individual program devised in consultation with the lecturer. Emphasis will be placed on problem-solving in relation to aims, cost and suitability of materials, appropriate processes, appropriate use of visual language and aesthetic considerations. Students undertake 10 days of related Field Experience.

Assessment:

A folio consisting of a maximum of twenty pieces (75%). The folio will be supported by a working journal and a research project equivalent to 1500 words (15%) and two exhibition reviews equivalent to 1000 words (10%). Students must satisfactorily complete the Field Experience component.
