485-447 Teaching Method in Mathematics - Senior D

Prerequisite/s:

Teaching Method in Mathematics - Junior 1C and at least 100 points in Mathematics subjects, preferably including studies in each of Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics.

Pre/Corequisite/s:

(For each Teaching Method D) Satisfactory completion of Education Studies C, School Experience C and a minimum of 250 points credit in the course. Concurrent enrolment in Education Studies D and School Experience D12.

A 90-minute workshop/discussion/laboratory session each week for a total of 20 weeks

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of current mathematics programs and curricula issues in Years 11-12;

  • demonstrate a knowledge of the mathematical needs of pupils in Years 11-12;

  • demonstrate a knowledge of a variety of mathematical learning/teaching strategies particularly appropriate to Years 11-12;

  • demonstrate a knowledge of and the ability to plan for the use of suitable materials and resources relating to the teaching of mathematics in Years 11-12;

  • demonstrate a knowledge of strategies for the assessment of and reporting on mathematical achievement; and

  • demonstrate the ability to plan and evaluate a sequence of lessons for a given Year 11-12 mathematical topic.

Content:

A detailed consideration of the VCE Mathematics Study Design, including the work requirements for the Study. Methods of teaching some of the important concepts in senior secondary mathematics.

Assessment:

Short weekly assignments (30%); an assignment on assessment in Year 11-12 mathematics (30%); a major planning assignment (25%); a class presentation on a mathematic topic suitable for use with Year 11-12 pupils (15%). All assignments must be completed.
