485-443 Teaching Method in Physics D

Only for repeating students.

Prerequisite/s:

Teaching Method in Science - Junior 1C and at least 40.0 points in Physics subjects at the Group 2 level or an approved equivalent.

Pre/Corequisite/s:

(For each Teaching Method D) Satisfactory completion of Education Studies C, School Experience C and a minimum of 250 points credit in the course. Concurrent enrolment in Education Studies D and School Experience D12.

A 90-minute lecture/discussion/workshop session each week for a total of 20 weeks

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • describe a variety of approaches to the organisation of and strategies for teaching physics in secondary schools;

  • demonstrate a knowledge of available resources relevant to physics teaching at secondary levels;

  • develop concept maps within the discipline of physics and related sciences;

  • devise valid methods for diagnosis, assessment and evaluation in physics teaching;

  • demonstrate an awareness of catering for individual differences; and

  • use microcomputers as an adjunct to traditional tuition in physics.

Content:

An introduction to the components of a secondary Physics course and the place of Physics in the curriculum. Topics include: aids to physics teaching; alternative courses; lesson, unit and syllabus planning; laboratory organisation, management and safety; assessment, evaluation and diagnosis; item writing and test construction.

Assessment:

Three major assignments, a demonstration, and two short assignments (100%). Attendance at and participation in classes is required.
