485-442 Teaching Method in Outdoor Education D

Pre/Corequisite/s:

  • (For each Teaching Method D) Satisfactory completion of Education Studies C, School Experience C and a minimum of 250 points credit in the course. Concurrent enrolment in Education Studies D and School Experience D12.

  • Teaching Method in Outdoor Education C and a pass or concurrent enrolment in Outdoor Education C4 and C5, or approved equivalent.

A 2-hour lecture/discussion/workshop session each week for a total of 15 weeks

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • apply learning theories and develop teaching strategies appropriate to Outdoor Education;

  • understand how pupils learn physically, cognitively, and effectively in outdoor education;

  • develop safe and effective learning environments in the classroom and outdoors;

  • plan experiences involving the section of appropriate teaching strategies and resources and the management of learning;

  • develop classroom skills in outdoor education; and

  • supply assessment theory and practice in outdoor education.

Content:

A study of teaching strategies and models of learning appropriate to education in the outdoors. Topics will include: theory of motor skill acquisition, legal liability and duty of care, methods of evaluation.

Assessment:

An assignment of approximately 2000 words (50%); participation in class including class paper and micro-teaching (50%).
