485-435 Teaching Method in Chemistry D

Prerequisite/s:

Teaching Method in Science - Junior 1C and at least 40.0 points in Chemistry at the Group 2 level or an approved equivalent.

Pre/Corequisite/s:

(For each Teaching Method D) Satisfactory completion of Education Studies C, School Experience C and a minimum of 250 points credit in the course. Concurrent enrolment in Education Studies D and School Experience D12.

A 90-minute lecture/discussion/workshop session each week for a total of 17 weeks, with three additional sessions for Individual Research Tasks

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • describe a variety of approaches to the organisation of and strategies for teaching chemistry in post-primary schools;

  • demonstrate a knowledge of available resources (texts, models, computer programs, videos) relevant to chemistry teaching at post primary level;

  • develop concept maps within the discipline of chemistry and related sciences;

  • devise valid methods for diagnosis, assessment and evaluation in chemistry teaching;

  • demonstrate an awareness of catering for individual differences; and

  • chemicals in a post primary school environment.

Content:

Content and rationale for the VCE Chemistry units; classroom management; teaching strategies; laboratory organisation and safety; assessment, evaluation, reporting and verification; demonstration techniques; concept mapping; language; use of chemical industry; sexism; computers in chemistry; catering for individual differences.

Assessment:

Assignments totalling 2000 words.
