485-332 Science Education C4: the Research Basis

This subject can be taken as a Link Study subject in Year 3 or 4, but is usually taken in Year 4.

33.3 credit points from Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics and/or Physical Science, plus Education B11 or B.

Four hours of lecture/seminar/workshop sessions a week

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • understand the nature of research in science education; recognise the potential applications of research studies; and

  • approach research studies in science education with a positive and critical attitude.

Content:

Topics selected from: the classroom application of recent research results, research strategies in education; attitudes in science education; the measurement of achievement and techniques for investigating classroom processes; language in the science classroom; gender issues in science education; analysis of science curriculum content in relation to children's learning and mixed-ability teaching.

Assessment:

Informed participation in classes; summaries of approximately 100 words each of ten class papers (20%); an assignment of approximately 1500 words on learning studies (30%); a seminar paper of about 1000 words (20%); a literature search of about 1500 words (30%).
