485-308 Outdoor Education C5: Expeditioning

Three 2-hour lectures and two 2-hour seminars

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • understand the nature and purpose of expeditions;

  • plan an expedition taking into account logistics, food, and equipment requirements; and

  • take the role of leader and group member in an expedition to demonstrate an awareness of group dynamics, safety precautions and expedition review techniques.

Content:

A study of the nature, purpose, planning, execution and reviewing of expeditions. Students will actively participate in at least two expeditions.

Assessment:

Class attendance and participation (10%); an assignment (60%); class presentation of a seminar paper of approximately 500 words (30%). Total written work of up to 2500 words.
