485-238 Learning Area: Health and Physical Education 2 (Advanced)

Note:

Satisfactory participation and performance in seminars and practical classes is required for students to pass this subject.

Prerequisite/s:

A minimum of an H2A in Learning Area: Health and Physical Education 1 or an approved equivalent. Students must hold or, by the end of the subject have obtained, teaching and coaching certificates as required.

A 5- hour session a week, comprising lectures, seminars, practical activity classes and a compulsory 4 day excursion

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • understand and implement the health and physical education strand of the Curriculum and Standards Framework;

  • understand current approaches to teaching and learning in health and physical education;

  • understand principles of motor learning and exercise prescription and apply them to the teaching situation;

  • understand cultural influences on children's choices and participation in health and physical education programs and implement culturally inclusive teaching strategies and content;

  • demonstrate an understanding of skill development, safety and challenge in outdoor education;

  • demonstrate an increased confidence in dealing with sexual matters which are likely to arise in a school setting;

  • demonstrate an understanding of recent advances in human nutrition through the life cycle; and

  • understand the concept of the health promoting school.

Content:

An examination of curriculum issues in health and physical education through the Curriculum and Standards Framework. Practical workshops and seminars focus upon primary school activities, and will prepare students for national coaching awards. Other topics will include motor learning theory and application; exercise prescription and application; human sexuality and classroom issues; safety and challenge in outdoor education; nutrition through the lifespan; and the health promoting school.

Assessment:

Written assignments totalling 1500 words (50%), a 3 hour examination (30%) and a school based project (20%).
