Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • demonstrate an awareness of current trends in mathematics education, teaching practice and theory;

  • demonstrate developing understandings related to the teaching and learning of mathematics in primary schools; and

  • prepare and use materials and activities which are appropriate for developing a child's understanding of primary school mathematics.

Content:

This subject aims to develop competency in the teaching of mathematics in the primary school. In particular, it focuses on the study of methods, materials and activities appropriate for developing a child's understanding of mathematical concepts and skills.

Assessment:

One major project and other assigned work totalling not more than 5000 words. Hurdle requirement: Satisfactory completion of a negotiated contract of study, class teaching tasks and presentations.
