Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • demonstrate personal competence in all strands of primary school mathematics;

  • demonstrate a pedagogical knowledge of the content of the Number, Space and Chance & Data strands, emphasising an understanding of the major stages of growth of children's understanding and their difficulties;

  • demonstrate a knowledge of methods, materials and activities which are appropriate for developing children's understandings in all strands;

  • demonstrate an awareness of and an ability to respond in teaching to important issues in teaching mathematics (including individual differences, gender, improving attitudes, technological change); and

  • demonstrate knowledge of a range of methods of assessment suitable for primary school mathematics and competence in monitoring and reporting on student learning.

Content:

A survey of primary mathematics curriculum content and investigation of teaching methodologies. Exploration of fundamental concepts, generalisations, skills and applications initially through investigations in Number & Measurement, then in the Space and Chance & Data strands. Assessment techniques appropriate to primary school mathematics.

Assessment:

Hurdle requirement: At least 90% proficiency on a set task covering all strands of the primary curriculum. Satisfactory completion of seminar presentation and weekly tasks. Two examinations (20% and 40%) plus two assignments totalling 3000 words (40%).
