483-426 Teaching Method in English D

Prerequisite/s:

Teaching Method in English C and 58.4 credit points in Language and Literature subjects including Language and Literature B1, or approved equivalent.

Pre/Corequisite/s:

(For each Teaching Method D) Satisfactory completion of Education Studies C, School Experience C and a minimum of 250 points credit in the course. Concurrent enrolment in Education Studies D and School Experience D12.

A 2-hour seminar/workshop each week for a total of 15 weeks

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the aims and objectives of English teaching;

  • demonstrate an understanding of the range of teaching strategies for the English classroom;

  • demonstrate a knowledge of the key concepts of curriculum policy formation and developments in the area of English in secondary schools;

  • demonstrate an ability to plan and resource lessons and units of work within subject English; and

  • demonstrate a knowledge of assessment methods and issues in subject English.

Content:

Key issues relevant to the contemporary English classroom, and the range of strategies available to teachers and students in schools. Investigation of key pedagogical ideas and procedures, with particular emphasis on the role of language in learning. Topics include: the inter-relationship of aims, classroom organisation, content and outcomes; the development of competency and understanding in the areas of speaking, listening, writing and reading; the role of drama and non-verbal communication; printed texts including adolescent literature and non-print texts including audio, visual, mixed media texts; materials and resources for the English classroom; differential teaching strategies; assessment and evaluation, and curriculum development.

Assessment:

A written exercise of approximately 500 words (20%); preparation of a seminar (30%); a negotiated exercise of approximately 1300 words (50%).
