483-424 Teaching Method in Drama D

Prerequisite/s:

Teaching Method in Drama C and 91.7 credit points in Drama subjects including Drama C1 and C2.

Pre/Corequisite/s:

(For each Teaching Method D) Satisfactory completion of Education Studies C, School Experience C and a minimum of 250 points credit in the course. Concurrent enrolment in Education Studies D and School Experience D12.

A 2-hour lecture/seminar each week for a total of 15 weeks

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • articulate a rationale for drama in schools based on a sound theoretical framework for drama in education;

  • demonstrate a knowledge of key issues influencing current curriculum practice in drama in Australian secondary schools;

  • design drama curriculum appropriate for the secondary school;

  • implement and evaluate drama curriculum to meet the needs of students within a specific educational context;

  • demonstrate confidence and competence in using a range of teaching strategies appropriate to promote students' learning in the drama classroom; and

  • understand the Arts Curriculum and Standards Framework and the VCE in relation to drama.

Content:

An extension and application of previous drama studies, focusing on the methods and materials of drama education to meet the needs of students in secondary schools. Topics include: drama in education within the contemporary Australian and Victorian educational context; teaching strategies and structures to promote learning in the drama classroom; the content of the drama class; designing and teaching drama curriculum appropriate for a specific educational context; implementing the national and state arts curriculum frameworks and VCE Theatre Studies and Drama Study Designs; assessment and evaluation in drama.

Assessment:

Class tasks (25%), a project of approximately 1500 words (50%) a written exercise of approximately 500 words (25%).
