483-416 School Studies D48: Language Other Than English (LOTE) Teaching 2

Note:

  1. This subject can be taken as a single subject without the practice teaching component. However, if you wish to be registered as a specialist LOTE teacher at the primary school level you must complete School Studies C48: LOTE Teaching 1, School Studies D48: LOTE Teaching 2 and the practice teaching outlined in the Special Requirements.

  2. Special requirements: Students will be required to undertake eight days of supervised teaching practice during second semester in a school with an approved LOTE program.

Pre/Corequisite/s:

483-326 School Studies C48, and a completed major LOTE sequence or concurrent enrolment in a major LOTE sequence study at Year 3 level post-VCE, or an approved equivalent.

Contact:

One 2-hour class each week for the year, except during periods of block school experience

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of how first/second language is acquired/learnt and used in bilingual/multilingual settings;

  • identify and describe the linguistic competencies and language learning needs of students in the second language classroom;

  • prepare, implement and evaluate appropriate curriculum materials aimed at specific groups of language learners; and

  • demonstrate how to adapt and modify existing resources to make them relevant to the learning of a language other than English in the Australian classroom.

Content:

A study of the nature of the second language learning/teaching situation; analysis of the processes involved in communication and the implications of this for the teaching of second language; development, implementation, evaluation of second language programs including bilingual programs; issues related to developing LOTE programs in primary schools will also be studied.

Assessment:

Assignments totalling not more than 4000 words (100%).
