483-343 Children's Literature C2: Advanced Studies

Prerequisite/s:

33.3 credit points in Language and Literature, or Children's Literature at B-level.

Contact:

Individual consultations and group seminars equivalent to at least a 2-hour seminar each week

Objectives:

On completion of the subject the student should be able to:

  • critically examine in depth one area of children's literature;

  • demonstrate ways of using literature in an educational program;

  • identify the theories of children's response to literature; and

  • observe and analyse the reader's response to literature.

Content:

An examination of one of: picture books and major styles of illustrators; genre studies, such as fantasy, science fiction, realism; the contemporary Australian children's novel. All will include childrens' responses to the books.

Assessment:

A 6000-word essay including a comprehensive report on children's responses to the books, based on practical work with children (100%).
