483-342 Children's Literature C1: Single Author Study

33.3 credit points in Language and Literature, or Children's Literature at B-level.

Contact:

Individual consultations and group seminars equivalent to at least a 2-hour seminar each week

Objectives:

On completion of the subject the student should be able to:

  • critically assess the strengths of a particular author; and

  • identify and apply essential elements of literary criticism.

Content:

An individual research project into the work of a single author, including an examination of the author's development, the strengths and weaknesses of the writing, cultural influences and characteristic concerns. Exploration of children's responses to the author's books.

Assessment:

A 6000-word literary essay including a comprehensive report on children's responses to the author's work, based on practical work with children (100%).
