483-326 School Studies C48: Language Other Than English (LOTE) Teaching I

Note:

  1. This subject can be taken as a single subject without the practice teaching component. However, if you wish to be registered as a specialist LOTE teacher at the primary school level you must complete School Studies C48: LOTE Teaching 1, School Studies D48: LOTE Teaching 2 and the practice teaching outlined in the Special Requirements.

  2. Special Requirements: Students will be required to do the June School Experience placement in a school with an appropriate LOTE program.

Pre/Corequisite/s:

A complete major LOTE sequence study at post VCE level or concurrent enrolment in a major LOTE sequence study or an approved equivalent.

Timetable:

Semester 1

Contact:

A 2-hour class each week for ten weeks

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • demonstrate a familiarity with theories and methods of second language teaching used in Australia and overseas;

  • develop appropriate LOTE curricula, syllabi and lesson plans suited to specific levels in the primary school; and

  • demonstrate prepared classroom activities and materials aimed at specific groups of community language classes.

Content:

Theories and methods of second language teaching. Topics include: teaching and learning strategies, curriculum design, classroom activities and types of materials appropriate for various categories of community language learners in schools. Issues related to developing community language programs in primary schools.

Assessment:

Assignments totalling not more than 2000 words.
