Objectives:

On completion of the subject students should be able to:

  • demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of a range of theories relating to emergent literacy;

  • demonstrate an awareness of the social and cultural influences on literacy practices;

  • demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between reading and writing and develop a teaching methodology to support this;

  • demonstrate an understanding of reading and writing in relation to text, context and linguistic features and strategies;

  • demonstrate an understanding of the importance of oral language in the development of literacy;

  • demonstrate an understanding of the nature and scope of current government policy in literacy education through planning, implementing and assessing a teaching sequence relating to both reading and writing; and

  • demonstrate an understanding of the nature of reflective practice in relation to literacy education.

Content:

An investigation into and application of selected theories related to emergent literacy; detailed observations of an individual child's literacy development and the implementation and evaluation of planned sequences of literacy instruction with attention to selection and use of appropriate strategies and resources.

Assessment:

Assignments and child study project totalling not more than 4500 words.
