12 one-hour lectures and a two-hour seminar/workshop each week

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to demonstrate:

  • an advanced understanding of the important contribution of the arts to the total curriculum and to the development of all aspects of children's growth;

  • a thorough understanding of the development of Arts Curricula, theories and practice reflected in practical and theoretical studies;

  • an understanding of how the Arts are constructed and disseminated as knowledge and as reflections of contemporary culture;

  • ability to plan, implement and evaluate comprehensive arts curricula across the primary school in dance, drama, music and visual arts; and

  • ability to plan, implement and evaluate a multi-arts project.

Content:

An examination of the scope and nature of teaching, learning and assessing the arts in the primary school. Students will extend their study of the arts forms and consider the relationships between the arts within an educational context. The contribution of the Artist in Schools program to arts education will be researched. The development of contemporary theories concerning artistic processes, creating and appraising in the arts and the role of imagination will be studied with reference to recent curriculum developments.

Assessment:

Written assignments and class tasks (30%); school-based arts curriculum program (30%); performance and visual arts project and report (40%).
