A 2-hour session each week, comprising lectures, seminars and practical workshops

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the Arts Framework P-10 with particular reference to the Art and Music platforms;

  • demonstrate an understanding of the important contribution of the arts to the total curriculum and to the development of all aspects of children's growth;

  • participate and contribute to a range of seminars and practical activity workshops which relate directly to teaching and learning in the arts;

  • demonstrate an ability to plan high quality, child centred programs in both art and music; and

  • demonstrate knowledge of current and recent research and curriculum innovations and resources for teaching.

Content:

An examination of the scope and nature of teaching and learning in the area of the arts in the primary school, in particular, Art and Music. Emphasis on curriculum content and planning and appropriate methodologies and resources.

Assessment:

Assignments and reports totalling up to 3000 words.
