One 2-hour practical workshop each week plus ten 1-hour lectures

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the arts as a key learning area for children;

  • demonstrate a knowledge of the arts concepts and skills as they relate to the child's development;

  • demonstrate an understanding of the basic elements of dance, drama, music and visual arts through their own artistic making and reflection; and

  • demonstrate an understanding of the ways in which the arts contribute to education and society.

Content:

An introductory study to the arts strands of dance, drama, music and visual arts. Students will focus on issues of both personal and educational significance as the basis for their arts practice. Emphasis will be placed on developing understanding of the processes in making, composing, performing, analysing and appraising within each of the arts strands.

Assessment:

Class tasks, performance and visual arts folio (75%); written report (15%); school-based arts curriculum project (10%).
