482-224 Education B2: Schools and Their Functioning

Note:

Education B1 and B2 are an alternative to the 33.3 point Education B, available only to those students whose enrolments preclude them from taking 33.3 points in Education in Year 2 of their course. Education B1 (22.2 points) must be taken prior to Education B2, normally in the second year of the course.

Contact:

A five day block of school experience in a Primary school. A total of 30 hours faculty based contact with one 2-hour core seminar each week plus up to one hour of additional lectures each week

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • demonstrate a developing knowledge of the differing organisational and decision making structures in schools and the ways in which these are claimed to influence the work of teachers and the experience of young people within them; and

  • demonstrate further development in levels of competence in basic classroom skills.

Content:

A combination of direct experience (including five days in schools) and study to build competence in basic classroom teaching skills and develop understanding of the structure and organisation of schools. Three areas of study are involved: a study of different patterns of local school provision in the public, independent and Catholic systems; a consideration of the ways in which curriculum decisions are made and implemented in schools and the related consequences for teachers' work and student learning outcomes; study of specific case studies of schools' responses to perceived needs.

Assessment:

Submissions totalling 3000 words comprising a seminar paper of 1000 words (33.3%); an essay/project of 2000 words (66.7%); and 5 days of School Experience. To gain a pass in the subject, students must perform satisfactorily in all areas of assessment, participate in classes and other activities.
