476-306 School Studies C1: Curriculum Issues and Approaches

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the connections between school policies and programs which takes into account CSF guidelines;

  • plan and document a school program;

  • plan for effective classroom management incorporating multi-age, multi-groupings and individual differences;

  • provide contexts which will allow learners to experience collaborative teaching and planning, sharing ideas, negotiation, analysis and feedback;

  • reflect on and clarify their on-going needs and interests as teachers; and

  • understand inquiry approaches to teaching and learning in the physical, biological and social sciences.

Content:

A study of primary school curriculum emphasising children's understanding of the physical and social world. Planning, organisation, teaching, evaluation and reporting strategies at a school and classroom level are considered within an integrated study of the primary school curriculum and teachers' work.

Assessment:

Reflective journal (20%) and three written assignments totalling 4000 words or equivalent (80%). Hurdle requirement: Satisfactory completion of a negotiated contract of study, class teaching tasks and presentations.
