476-110 School Experience 1, 476-112 Education 1: Children, Schools and Society, or approved equivalent.

Education 2 subjects.

Normally two separate school placements of fifteen days at designated schools, scheduled in June and November

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • demonstrate a further knowledge of the school as a social and cultural institution within broader societal and cultural contexts;

  • implement language, mathematics, arts, physical education and health curricula and demonstrate some understanding of implementing other aspects of the curriculum;

  • demonstrate improved personal skills in working with children in increasingly large groups and in carrying out more complex teaching assignments; and

  • demonstrate an understanding of the capacities, responses and needs of individual children and the ability to cater for these in planning teaching assignments.

Content:

Through direct experience, the subject provides for understanding of: the overall functioning of primary schools, capacities and responses of individual children in school settings; specific characteristics of a school's operations at the end of a school year and development of teaching skills to effectively implement planned programs for a whole day across key learning areas.

Assessment:

30 days of supervised school experience (100%).
