476-212 Education 2A (Advanced): Educational Theories and Practices

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of current educational research literature in the disciplines of Sociology, Psychology and Philosophy;

  • demonstrate an understanding of key educational research findings both in Australia and internationally in current sociological literature;

  • demonstrate an understanding of the implications of recent child development research findings to classroom practice;

  • understand the teaching of reasoning skills through classroom work centred on philosophical issues.

Content:

A study of the current educational literature arising from the major disciplines of Sociology, Philosophy, Comparative Education and Educational Psychology will be undertaken, with specific reference to; equity, diversity, and excellence in education and its links to government policy; the impact of child development research findings in the areas of cognitive, language and personal-social development on classroom practices; the significance of an inquiry approach, including cooperative dialogue in developing a range of effective thinking and reasoning strategies for students.

Assessment:

Completion of three 1500 word assignments (33% each).
