Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of how studies in a number of major disciplines underpin current educational theory and practice;

  • demonstrate a broad perspective on education and possess the skills to reflect on and debate current educational concerns;

  • understand how education functions for the individual, for different groups, and for the society; and

  • identify models in contemporary classroom practice that have been generated by child development theory.

Content:

A study of theories from the major disciplines underpinning current educational practice will be undertaken. Theories from Sociology, Philosophy, Comparative Education and Educational Psychology will be presented, noting their relevance to contemporary educational issues such as discipline, access to education, education of ethnic minorities, gender and the Schools of the Future program. A significant component of the subject will examine the applicability of child development concepts to classroom practices.

Assessment:

Three assignments totalling 4500 words.
