Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

• analyse the school as a social institution within broader cultural contexts;

• demonstrate a developing understanding about the nature of learning and the ways in which learning is facilitated in schools;

• demonstrate an understanding of major theories of cognitive and personal social development in childhood that have provided foundations for contemporary educational practice; and

• demonstrate a broad understanding of the elements of the P-6 curriculum.

Content:

An overview of educational theory and practice to enable students to develop their initial perspectives of teaching through an understanding of children, schools and society. An introductory examination of the philosophical and sociological bases of education, linked to experiences in schools. An overview of developmental theories which have contributed to knowledge of how children come to understand their world and their social reality.
