Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

• demonstrate understanding of key concepts included in the study of society and environment in Australian schools;

• demonstrate understanding of how we build knowledge of our social, cultural, biological and physical environments and of ways in which this knowledge building can be achieved for children through the school curriculum;

• participate effectively as individuals and collaboratively in the processes of information gathering, analysis and judgement which form the basis of democratic citizenship and which should characterise classroom procedures; and

• articulate, defend and develop views arising from the study of society and human interactions with the natural and constructed environments.

Content:

An examination of aspects of our knowledge of society and the environment and how we can assist children to develop key understandings, skills and values in these fields through the study of topics selected from class; culture; ethnicity and race; the changing nature of work; the impact of technology; media and communication; continuity and the nature and process of social and cultural change; ecologically sustainable development; resource management and conservation; place and space.
