468-403 Contextual Issues in Curriculum

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • describe the role of vocational education and training [VET] within an historical, economic and global context, in relation to the nature and distribution of work and the importance of lifelong learning;

  • critically analyse curriculum policy, and explain the implications of national VET policy, for example, the National Training Reform Agenda;

  • demonstrate an understanding of the nature of VET, including the structure, management, economics, relationships with industry and other stakeholders and the cultures of various significant groups; and

  • critically evaluate current and alternative structures accommodating people under-represented in VET, for example, those from a non-English speaking background, women, Koori and unemployed people and those without adequate social, literacy and numeracy skills.

Content:

Historical, global, political, economic and industrial developments which are influencing current and future trends in vocational curriculum development and practice in Australia and elsewhere; policy analysis, development and organisational structures in VET; client groups and providers within the VET sector; and emergent issues for VET practitioners.

Assessment:

A seminar paper of 2000 words (27%) and an assignment of 5500 words or an equivalent individually negotiated project (73%).
