468-304 Praxis

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • explain the integration of selected theories of learning and communication in their own educational and training practices;

  • demonstrate the capacity to use reflection as a means of evaluating their own and others' professional practice;

  • use theories studied and current research findings to critically review education and training practices; and

  • explore and analyse the influence of selected strategic actions in a particular context.

Content:

The dialectic of theory and practice: the nature of praxis, narrative inquiry and action research; propositional, practical and tacit knowledge; models of reflection including the exploration of critical incidents; the construction of grounded theory from data gathered from particular workplace contexts.

Assessment:

One case study of 3000 words (40%) and one negotiated field research project of 4500 words (60%).
