468-217 Managing Network Systems

Note:

Special Requirements: Students in this subject are required to complete a concurrent Workplace Learning Agreement. Students in this subject are expected to have sound working knowledge of computer applications and recent experience of network systems in their workplace. Lecturer's approval is required.

Timetable:

Semester 1 and 2

Contact:

40 hours including a minimum of two hours per week for ten weeks in an approved workplace setting

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • identify the factors affecting the use of information processing equipment in a workplace network;

  • assess the benefits of using networks and alternative approaches available;

  • evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of different networks and analyse implications for budgeting; and

  • demonstrate basic understanding of problem-solving and security issues of data access.

Content:

Computer network systems in learning; organisational information needs and processes; implementation of different types of networks; characteristics, capabilities and limitations of selected networks; components of a Local Area Network (LAN), PC to network interface, implications of networks for information management systems.

Assessment:

An essay of 1500 words on a negotiated topic (50%) and a project derived from the workplace learning agreement (50%).
