468-201 Diversity

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • identify diverse concerns, interests, needs and approaches within a group of learners in education and training settings;

  • demonstrate an understanding of potential challenges to communication arising from different life experiences;

  • evaluate considerations for learning arising from class, culture, gender, age and language differences, together with those associated with physical and specific learning disabilities; and

  • develop strategies for helping to address the challenges to learning and communication arising from diversity.

Content:

A study of: the impact of psychological/emotional, perceptual/cognitive, social/cultural and physical/physiological factors influencing learning, such as anxiety, gender and occupational identity and specific learning disabilities. This would include particular challenges facing learners such as overseas students, unemployed people, adult learners and young people; the development of appropriate teaching and learning strategies.

Assessment:

A case study of 1800 words (50%) and an essay of 1800 words (50%).
