466-484 Research Methods B: Individual Project

Objectives:

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • design an individual research project;

  • conduct an individual research project, including the collection, description and analysis of data;

  • use an appropriate range of methods of presenting data and of descriptive and inferential statistics;

  • use selected computer software for the presentation and analysis of data; and

  • present a written research report which conforms to scholarly conventions.

Content:

A study of the design, conduct and presentation of an individual research project. This will include: an examination of principles of research design and methods of data collection; an overview of methods of organising and describing data in a systematic way using both numerical and graphical methods; an introduction to concepts underlying statistics and selected statistical tests; a consideration of a range of computer software for graphing, tabulating and analysing data; a consideration of ways of presenting and communicating research results. Specific topics will be examined in further detail according to the needs of individual students and the demands of their chosen projects.

Assessment:

A 1000 word, half-hour class presentation of the design of a proposed research project (10%); and a 9000 word research thesis (90%).
