466-417 CDS 4C: Infancy

Prerequisite/s:

A minimum of 120 points of Child Development Studies or approved equivalent.

Timetable:

Semester 2

Contact:

A 2-hour lecture/tutorial each week for seven weeks and a 2-hour student-led seminar each week for the remaining six weeks

Objectives:

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • appreciate the significance of the infancy period for child development and child rearing;

  • demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of infant development in the perceptual-cognitive, social-emotional and communicative domains;

  • show understanding of key theories and empirical literature contributing to the debate between childhood vulnerability and resiliency models of development and contribute to informed discussion of relevant issues in formal seminars and peer-based activities; and

  • demonstrate knowledge of the sociological, anthropological and cultural perspectives on infancy.

Content:

An in-depth study of the infancy period. Content will include current research findings on the emerging competencies of the infant in the perceptual-cognitive, social-emotional and communicative domains; detailed appraisal of theoretical and empirical work contributing to ongoing debate on the role of experiences in infancy on later development (models of childhood vulnerability vs resiliency); the role of various contexts, including family and non-parental child care, on infant development.

Assessment:

A 4000 word assignment based on a seminar presentation (80%) and a 1000 word abstract (20%).
