This subject is offered externally, normally with four hours contact time on campus; however, students may negotiate with the lecturer for additional contact time

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • demonstrate scholarship in dance through reading and writing about selected areas of dance aesthetics and history.

Content:

A study of the 'new' dance forms which emerged in Europe during the period between the two world wars (this period has particular relevance to current philosophy and practice in dance education); major dance artists to be reviewed such as Isadora Duncan, Rudolf Laban, Mary Wigman and Gertrude Bodenweiser.

Assessment:

Two 2500-word essays on the appreciation of dance in performance and the aesthetic component in the teaching of dance (50% each).
