Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

• demonstrate through practice the implications of theoretical understandings with regard to the young child, early childhood curriculum, professional ethics, administration and management;

• plan, implement and evaluate a quality programme for children based on sound theoretical and philosophic understandings, informed by curriculum integration and equity issues; and

• demonstrate an ability to critically evaluate and reflect on their attitudes and behaviour in order to enhance professional growth and develop leadership skills.

Content:

This will focus on issues generated within the student's practice in either a 0-3 or 3-5 years setting, for example, kindergartens and child care services. Students may choose to further develop these skills in a setting of their choice. This could include programmes for children 5-8 years, home-based programmes, and programmes that integrate or cater specifically for children with special needs. Students will be encouraged to reflect on their behaviour and attitudes in order to enhance their professional growth.
