Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the specific dimensions of child development introduced in the first year of Child Development Studies;

  • demonstrate an advanced understanding of details of selected theories which support an enhanced understanding of development in these various dimensions;

  • show familiarity with a range of key empirical and research studies in the field of child development;

  • demonstrate the ability to apply selected methods of research in observationally-based tasks; and

  • demonstrate a developed understanding of the significance of social context with particular focus on the family.

Content:

A study of the theoretical and empirical work relevant to child development and its practical applications including sensory, perceptual, motor language, cognitive and social development. The aspects of development will be integrated through a child study.

Assessment:

Two essays of 1500 words each or equivalent tasks (60%); and a 2-hour examination (40%).
