The Early Childhood Professional 1 or approved equivalent.

Contact:

Two 1-hour lectures and a 1-hour tutorial/workshop each week

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • understand the basis of some critical areas of debate surrounding responsibility for children during early childhood;

  • consider analytically the changing conceptions of the functions of the professional involved in children's services;

  • demonstrate knowledge relating to the health, nutrition and safety of children; and

  • demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of quality assurance in children's services.

Content:

The role of the early childhood professional as an educator; the Children's Services Centres' Regulations versus accreditation; guidelines, policies and practices for health, nutrition, safety and their particular application to children 0-3 years of age.

Assessment:

An applied task(s) or equivalent (40%) and a 3-hour examination (60%).
