Three hours of lectures/workshops/tutorials each week or equivalent. 24 days of practicum

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • plan, implement and evaluate a curriculum for children 0-3 years;

  • demonstrate a sound knowledge of curriculum development with reference to children 0-3 years;

  • demonstrate knowledge of mathematics and science for young children in a curriculum context; and

  • identify strategies for planning learning experiences which enhance mathematics and science learning for young children.

Content:

Approaches to formulating, implementing and evaluating programs for children aged 0-3 years. Frameworks and strategies for planning learning experiences in mathematics and science for young children.

Assessment:

Three curriculum projects (60%) totalling 3000 words comprising mathematics (30%), curriculum (20%), science (10%); and a practicum assessment (40%). Satisfactory completion of 24 days practicum and related practical and theoretical work as specified in the Practicum Handbook. Students must pass both written and practicum assessment requirements.
