466-261 ID Arts 2B: The Arts in Society

Interdisciplinary Arts 1A and 1B or approved equivalent.

Two 2-hour lecture/seminar sessions each week, and appropriate cultural excursions

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • identify and evaluate different theoretical approaches to art disciplines and their potential for integration;

  • demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of aesthetics;

  • recognise cultural determinants in the selection of arts experiences for young children; and

  • identify historical and cultural influences on the arts.

Content:

A study of social, historical and philosophical contexts of the arts and their relevance to early childhood education. Topics will include aesthetics, critical analysis, cultural and historical perspectives.

Assessment:

Written work to a total of 5000 words. Each piece of work must be completed satisfactorily.
