466-208 Australia 2B: Decades of Contrast

Two 2-hour lecture/seminar/workshop sessions each week and excursions

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge of the changes that have taken place in twentieth century Australian society;

  • demonstrate familiarity with major historical events of this period in Australian history;

  • explain the social impact of these events on families and children;

  • demonstrate knowledge of particular problems related to post-war development and depression; and

  • show an awareness of the expression of these issues in literature.

Content:

A study from a variety of perspectives of two different periods of post-war Australian society in the twentieth century with emphasis on family life and childhood in those years.

Assessment:

Two 2500-word essays or equivalent (50% each). Each piece of work must be completed satisfactorily.

Prescribed Texts:

Booklet of material compiled by the Department of Early Childhood Studies to be purchased by students.
