Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

• demonstrate a knowledge of the structure, function and development of the sensory and motor systems;

• understand theories of perceptual development;

• understand the role of voluntary and involuntary factors in the organisation and development of movement;

• understand the progression of development of motor skills;

• appreciate the influence of experiential factors on perceptual and motor learning; and

• appreciate the relationship between perceptual and motor aspects of development and the significance of their effects on aspects of cognitive development.

Content:

The emergence of sensory, perceptual and motor competence in the young child. The organisation of the sensory and motor systems and an examination of factors that influence the development of perceptual competence and motor skill. Theories of perceptual development and motor learning and the psychological development of the child.
