Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the way books for children reflect their historical context;

  • analyse in detail the writing and the illustrations in a number of picture-story books, and demonstrate an understanding of them;

  • demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of a number of well-known author-illustrators and some of their work; and

  • demonstrate a knowledge of some of the techniques writers and illustrators use to create meaning in their works.

Content:

An introductory study of children's literature covering a range of styles, modes and genres, and focusing on a number of set picture-story books.

Assessment:

Written work equivalent to 2500 words (100%).
