Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • demonstrate a satisfactory level of knowledge and skills, including problem solving, in selected areas of elementary mathematics and science;

  • demonstrate an understanding of the relevant principles and laws which underpin elementary mathematics;

  • appreciate the need to show a positive attitude to mathematics, science and the environment;

  • appreciate the integration of science and technology in society and their relevance to everyday life; and

  • appreciate the importance of linguistic skills in the production of clear, accurate and effective written communication.

Content:

Introductory studies in mathematics, science and language literacy, to provide background knowledge and skills in those areas for early childhood educators.

Assessment:

Tasks, written exercises and a 1-hour test in mathematics equivalent to not more than 1500 words (40%); tasks, written exercises and a 1-hour test on basic physical and biological knowledge equivalent to not more than 1500 words (40%); tasks, written exercises in language literacy equivalent to not more than 750 words or a 1-hour test (20%). To pass the subject, students must satisfactorily complete each of the above requirements.
