466-126 Literature Studies 1A: Literature and the Young Child 1

4 hours per week, using a variety of teaching methods including lectures, seminars and workshops

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • demonstrate a knowledge of the range of styles, modes and genres in literature for children 0-8;

  • demonstrate a knowledge of the factors involved in textual analysis;

  • demonstrate a knowledge of a range of critical writings on children's literature; and

  • demonstrate awareness of the link between critical appreciation of forms of story and the use of literature in the early childhood curriculum.

Content:

An introductory study of literature for children 0 - 8, covering a range of styles, modes and genres.

Assessment:

A seminar paper of 1750 words, or equivalent (40%); and a essay of 2250 words, or equivalent (60%).

Prescribed Texts:

Selected literature as directed in class.
