460-140 School Experience and Practice Teaching 1

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • observe and analyse the ways in which educational theory and government policy as addressed in the accompanying components of the course are realised in the school, and apply these in their teaching;

  • understand the role of the individual teacher with regard to children's learning;

  • demonstrate the ability to select, organise and effectively deliver appropriate content for the class level being taught;

  • demonstrate skills in equipment operation, resources management and the production of teaching materials;

  • demonstrate a clear understanding of the capacities and responses of individual children in school settings, and the ability to cater for the range;

  • demonstrate an awareness of the variety of ways to record and report assessment of learning; and

  • reflect critically upon their experience during the placement

  • demonstrate a variety of teaching approaches and application of positive classroom management strategies.

Content:

This subject is designed to introduce students to both Primary and Secondary schools in the Victorian Education system and the role of teachers within these institutions, and to provide specialist teaching experience under the guidance of a supervising teacher or teachers. The subject will involve: ten days induction in a Primary school; five days induction in a Secondary school; fifteen days initial teaching experience at a particular class level (Primary) or specialist teaching or experience in particular teaching areas (Secondary); twenty days specialist teaching experience under the guidance of a supervising teacher or teachers in a designated Primary or Secondary school, during which students will be expected to take on greater responsibility for planning and implementing classes.

Assessment:

50 days of supervised school experience (100%).
